People and farmers are also exposed to dangerous pesticides. Pesticides are designed to control pests, but they can also be toxic (poisonous) to desirable plants and animals, including humans. Some pesticides are so highly toxic that very small quantities can kill a person, and exposure to a sufficient amount of almost any pesticide can make a person ill. Since even fairly safe pesticides can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, or mouth, there should be a high priority to put safety first in environments like these. Bar tenders or people working in the catering industry are exposed to cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke irritates the lungs and impairs their self-cleaning ability, so inhaling smoke are the risks involved in these work environments. Consider asbestos workers who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day. Due to their environment they have greatly increased their chance of lung cancer. Such workers have up to 90 times the chance of dying of lung cancer compared with workers who neither smoke nor work with asbestos. This demonstrates the immense importance of work safety in hazardous environments. All people who work in dangerous surroundings should have to consider respirators at work and discuss to others in relation to work safety procedures.
